Default fuel octane

I'm curious if you get better mileage by using a higher octane fuel.
Are there any other benefits in buying super or supreme?

Actually yes it is worth it. The higher the octane the less ethanol added to the fuel. Ethanol is only 60-65% as efficient as gasoline. After learning this I only use premium it may cost more but I refuel less. Depending on your state try to find out what the state mandate is for ethanol in fuel, maybe find a place that doesn't add it?

Simple answer is it depends. Having a stock tuned truck can run ok and get a little better mileage. Some vehicles may ping under load or acceleration due to the timing difference that is needed to properly burn a higher octane fuel. If you have a programmer that can adjust for those different octanes, then it's perfectly fine to run at those levels. I saw once on here that they figured the difference of using 87 v. 91 and even with the 20 cent spread in price, the mileage made up for the cost so it's a wash either way. It's just a matter of how much you want to pay at the pump each time.

Actually the simple answer is no, you will not get better mileage running higher octane gas. Now with that being said if you vehicle is modified than maybe you should. If you are using a custom tuner, high compression heads/pistons, modified ignition, or other performance modifications then higher octane fuel may be required. The octane rating of gas is the measure of its resistance to ignite or burn. Hence the lower octane is easier to ignite than a higher octane. Higher octane fuel requires more energy to ignite. Running higher octane in stock engine may decrease your MPG and hurt your performance. People also will claim that the higher octane fuels are cleaner. This is not true for most part. The same detergent and additive package is generally used in all the fuels for the name brand fuels.
