2001 F150 with 5.4L

Wife was driving and I think she got some bad gas. I changed the fuel filter and the stuff that came out the back side was nasty looking. The truck was running bad and check engine light came on. The truck runs great since I changed the filter. I was thinking that the check engine light would reset after 25-50 miles but not sure. Can I just disconnect the battery or will I have to have someone reset it?

 

I believe the way these computers handle it is after a certain amount of key turns, it will shut itself off. I can't remember exactly how many it is, but I'm almost certain this is how it works...you can also obviously just have a shop clear it if it bothers you too much. The way it apparently works is that once the truck has so many starts under its belt and the computer doesn't detect a problem on any of them, it resets itself and shuts off the light. My advice would be to not worry...I'm sure if this isn't right, someone can chime in and correct me, but this is the info I was given in the past.

 

I have a 98 f150 4.6. Pulling the battery cable off does clear out the check engine light. The fault might stay in a history file. 2nd option is to go to auto part store. Most seem to be more than willing to look at engine codes or clear them out without a charge.
