Default Front Differential

So yesterday i was stuck in some snow, so i put the ole truck in four wheel drive and attempted to pull out. Well I know now that the four wheel drive didn't fully engage, or something, so the rear tires spun and we heard a loud bang, jerk, and no four wheel drive. Still stuck i tried it one more time, no front wheels. So i gave up after some colorful language and had a Chevy pull me out.

Today i put the truck on the lift and checked her out, transfer case locks in "A-OK" so then i check out the front, not locking in. I pull off the cover to check the vacuum actuator, has vacuum and operated fine, but still not locking in, front wheels spin freely and the drive shaft does nothing. So i have come to the conclusion the differential gears are screwed, which i didn't think at first cause it didn't seem possible to be that bad a clunk.

So I ask you, how do i tell what gears these trucks have?

My truck is:
1998 F-150 XLT Auto, Supercab
5.4L
Turn **** 4wd

Rear end tag:
-3 909 B-1
5 975 8A26

Any other ideas on whats wrong are greatly appreciated and thanks for reading all of my essay.

Well, you can check the data tag that is located on your drivers side door jamb, or on the door itself. On the bottom right corner it will say "axle" and have a two digit code under it.

Report back with the code and I can tell you what it is.

Also, it probably isn't the gears, if it was it would definitely make some bad noises. Its more likely the shift fork or another small part in the front diff.

I'm sure there's somebody else on here that has a little more knowhow.

Hope you get it figured out, it always sucks to have problems with your truck.

Just keep us updated and we'll try to help you all that we can.

You have a 3.55 with rear limited slip.
