Default fly wheel

I have an 03 FX4 and i like to go offroading and one day i went out to go to school but it wouldn't start. we took it to the dealership and was told that some of the teeth were missing from the fly wheel. I had to replace it for over $1000 and i was wondering if there is a cover to go over the fly wheel or something?

Thanks

The fly wheel is an internal engine component. It is not exposed. The starter gear extends and engages the fly wheel when you turn your ignition key. The missing teeth can come from trying to start the truck when it is already running, or leaving the starter engaged after the engine has fired up.

First - welcome to the site!

Suggest that any damage due to off-roading would involve more than just a few missing teeth - well, for the flywheel anyway.

Hmmm, would've thought that the newer vehicles with all their fancy-shmancy computer controls would be smart enough to not allow starter engagement if the engine is already rotating?

Or perhaps computers can never take the place of common sense?

On the other hand - could have a defective flywheel or starter bendix?
