I had a 97 4.0 4x4 with a 4" lift and 32x11.50's on it and it got 15 MPG on highway. It also had the 5 speed auto tranny it in, and I would usually go about 75/80 down the highway......my 01 screw 6" lift gets about 13mpg.....i figured it was worth it for more truck.

My 2007 XLT Screw 4.6L gets BETTER gas milage then my co-workers 2007 Ford Ranger.

Other then my Firestone Destinations my truck is essentially stock. Both his ranger and my F150 have Tonneau Covers.

He's really considering selling his ranger and getting an F150 now. I can't blame him, It's better to have "too much" of something thats equal to something else lesser.

These are alot more expensive and newer vehicles than I can get. I understand if I got a newer f150 it would get better mpg, but thats not the situation I got going here.

If I were you, I'd try my hardest to figure out why your getting such terrible mileage. A 4.6 shouldn't get that low of mileage unless its towing something really heavy, or has a huge lift and really big tires.

There must be something somewhere that you and your meachanic are missing, how about the front O2 sensors in the exhaust, I've heard that they can wear out and cause really bad mileage.

Yeah.. I know there is something wrong because i used to have a check engine light on, but it hasnt come on for a long time. It used to read something about the IAC and 02 sensors. It still idles high when i start it up, and then the idle seems to pulse up and down. I saw one post saying there was a rubber hose piece behind the throttle body that can leak sometimes, so i am trying to figure out what that is. I never replaced the IAC because the light went off. Could the IAC be robbing me off mpg? Nobody has commented on that yet. I don't really have the knowledge,or money to start replacing random stuff on a piece of **** truck, so idk what to do with it.

the IAC will have no effect on your MPG's, all that does is regulate your idle rpm's. if you havent done so already id start with a tune up. plugs, fuel filter, air filter, 02's (depending on mileage), clean MAF and possible change diff fluids.

well its got over 150,000 on it. I have a new air filter, new plugs and wires. cleaned the maf and did a bunch of highway driving, plus a little city and still only got 13.8 mpg. havent done the fuel filter or O2's yet, but not sure if its even worth it. also tried running non-oxy 91 octane(no s**t ethanol).

My cousin has a 2004 ranger with a 4.0 and five speed and he gets 13 mpg's which I get in my 2000 f150 with a 5.4 so I would believe it.
