What would the downside of having a full fiberglass front end? Would rubbing trees in the hills tear it up?

 

Yep. It will flex a little but it also can splinter. If trail running is what you are after, wider fenders aren't optimum. You want to be as narrow as possible. There are a couple ways to increase wheel travel and not go wider. It's all in what you want.
