Default exhaust question

i have a 98 and it has a manifold leak. how bad of a job is it to replace that?
and is would the exhaust be louder without a muffler or with a flowmaster. i really want a moderately loud rumble but nothing too loud. thanks guys

It's not a hard job to do but if the head broke off of the studs it makes it tricky. Either go with a Dorman replacement or shorties if you're just wanting to replace. Long tubes would be an upgrade but you will need a tune to run them. No muffler will be louder and have a bad tone. If you're stuck on the Flowmaster sound go with a super 10 stainless. If you want a mellow idle and louder when you get on it a Magnaflow, Dynomax bullet, Corsa, or Borla muffler will be a better choice in my opinion.

Flowmaster super 10 is loud at idle but sounds weak you get on it. Im going tommorow to get my super 10 cut off and just run it without a muffler. But i have an 04 with 4 cats so it may be louder on your truck.

Those headers can really be a bastard if you brake a stud. I'd soak all the studs thorougly with PB blaster overnight. That will make them much easier to change. When you get replacement gaskets, try and get the laminated metal ones. Fel Pro factory replacements are usually the best. Hopefully it's just a gasket. If it's a cracked exhaust manifold, you can probably get that welded.

hell ya boys, thats why i love this site. lots of help.

but i think the problem is with the bolts. i had the muffler shop take a look at it and they tightened the bolts and it sounded alot better until they became loose again.

The bolts came loose which messed up the gasket, which is the problem then. Just replace the gasket and be on your way.

Here's what I did after I replaced my engine.....

2 3/4in. Hedman Hedders flowing to stock catalytic converters(if you replace the cats with a highflow aftermarket cat, you'll get an emissions code that won't go away if you don't adjust it with a performance chip) into a dual in, dual out Thrush muffler....I love it, but wish I would have gone with a 3 inch stainless steel system

Before I pulled the engine, I had a Flowmaster Super 40 Series muffler, and I hated it....I like to wake up the neighbors nice and early in the morning when I go outside to warm her up. plus you get a satisfied feeling when you set off a car alarm driving by....

Remember, loud and obnoxious is the way to go!
