No, It's Ethanol/Alcohol Destroying your Cats.

I also wanted to delete the EGR before but after I found out the Disadvantages without it now I don't see any good advantage of doing it. The Black substance building up in the intake is not from the EGR. It's Oil vaporizing From the PCV.

The Aluminum CylinderHeads can get warped easily without EGR especially if the A/C Condenser stop producing hot air. Aluminum can't tolerate a sudden and rapid change in operating temperature. It also make it more harder to boil off moisture and fuel dissolve in the engine oil.

That sounds right to me. I didn't want to delete anything. Some one else mentioned it. I agree strongly about the ethanol BS Al Gore had put in our gas ruining it, engines, fuel systems, and raising the price of gas because different formulas had to be made for each state instead of a winter / summer mix they always used before. I'm all for going back to pre-Al Gore gasoline!!! They also oxygenated it making it more corrosive and causing growths in the gas and fuel systems ruining all our outdoor power equipment and motorsports equipment. I remember the pink gas we had most of my life, A car could sit for years, drop a new battery in it and it would start right up (given not too hot of a climate) and turn to vinegar, not to much of a problem up north, more-so in the southern heat. Now we have to buy Non-oxygenated fuel for everything that sits more that a week and add stabilizers.

Back to the thread, did you do one of these swaps?

Does your old engine use a Coil Pack or Coil Over Plug Ignition system?

The problem doing this swap is the Transmission. You will need to replace the solenoids to make the newer PCM compatible. 97 below use different Shift Solenoid.

Just get a E150 Engine that has a Silent type Timing Chain and Cam Sprockets. When it's idling @ operating temp all you can hear is the air when the fun clutch engage. The PCM is also calibrated to a 16 inch wheel. You only need to step on the throttle lightly to get 60 mph.

It's (OE) a late 98' 5.4L COP. I just had the trans. rebuilt with all the updates and 6 steel planetaries and an HQ aftermarket torque converter. New everything inside. Cost $2750.00 Again, I'm going to be using my stock 98' non-PI pcm, not the 03'. It also was replaced new back in 05' for big bucks.
All I want to do is leave in-place all OE 98' electronics/sensors/COP/injectors and put a newer 03' PI engine underneath it. The 98' OE electronics will all plug into the new 03' engine, heads, and intake. The MAF sensor should detect the new, higher inflow of air and adjust air and fuel trims accordingly
but only as far as the 98' pcm was programmed to do, that's why I will need a custom tune, or tuner.

The only few issues I can think of are EGR tube/which year? splicing in knock sensor to 98' harness, and maybe the coolant temp sensor, changing it;s length if they moved its location and splicing that to fit the OE harness also. I do have the 03' top of engine harness. I asked them to include it when they shipped the 03' PI engine to me and a few other things on top the motor. In theory it should start up and work fine. I talked to one other guy (who I can't get back in-touch with who did it and said his started up and ran great, just a few small wiring items as I've just explained to be done and the custom tune of coarse. I'm not sure about how to tackle that one. I just want a dependable daily driver that has the added hp I need for towing etc. Something I don't have to mess with other than reg. maintenance.

Just wondering why you want this newer model engine which is almost exactly the same as the old model? What if some sensors in the engine are not compatible with the older PCM just like the tranny solenoid? It's eassier to use the new pcm and replace the solenoids in the valve body on your tranny.

Check RockAuto site for the sensors compability and PCM. You need a PC or Laptop brower to see what year and model the part can be installed.

The PCM has different calibration code make sure the 03 PCM has the same code.

The newer model engine has all the problems fixed from earlier years: More spark plug threads, increased gasket sealing areas on the intake, and 30 extra hp which I've stated several times in this post. I won't be using sensors from the new engine and I have gone through Rock Autos site on every part to compare, some are the exact same a few are different which will need splicing as I've been told. I just paid thousands for a newly rebuilt trans with new solenoids that already work with the OE pcm of coarse. ALL 98' electronic parts will be installed on this newer block. AGAIN, I'M NOT USING THE 03' PCM, SENSORS, OR WIRING OR ELECTRONICS.

All 03' electronics will be taken off first. The sensors and pcm are not going to "know" what block is under them, they will simply see the increase in air MAF flow and adjust the pcm to set the appropriate fuel trim. I will just need a custom tune to take full advantage of the newer PI improvements in the 03' version to achieve what basically is an 03' Ford flash on my 98' pcm. I wish I could get in-touch with that guy that did it already, his works just great and has run fine for years. He also (at the time) told me others have done so with no problems. This is the simplest coarse for a low dollar swap with maximum gains for the money. No 03' electronics will be used with it unless they happen to match the 98's or can be spliced in to work, like the knock sensor and coolant temp. for example. That's why I posted this thread to find those things out?

Never heard back from franchi?

Q: Does the intake manifold have to come off to pull or install the 5.4L out of the 98' F150?

Wow alot of bad information. To use the PI 5.4 in a NPI equipped truck you only need to reuse the the throttle body elbow. Everthying else from the newer 99+ engine will work. You will have to drill out the header flange holes in your y-pipe because the PI manifold have larger studs along with a slightly wider bolt pattern. You also have to remove the y-pipe hanger at the back of the transmission to allow the y-pipe to slide .5" forward. Dont worry about the CHT because in 99+ they stopped using the CHT. Just have it removed in a program.

Yes. you have to pull to get enough clearence, it also makes getting the top 2 bellhousing bolts a piece of cake.

No, you don't use O3 electronics, - not on a 98. An 03 flash isn't going to work. Just keep it simple, - it's not going to hurt and it'll run and work correctly. The coolant sensor can relocate easily into a rubber coolant line, (brass fitting). Leave the knock sensor be.

Forget the 03 flash all together....I'm tellin yuh lol.

I would do at the dyno tho, - speed-shop or whom ever runs a dyno around there. All they have to do is compensate for more flow.

You can really make that custom tune worth it adding LT headers.
