Default Engine Replacement

Love this site. Could read it all day. Need to replace engine. Have a 2000 F150 with 4.2L V-6. Would like to replace with older model engine like a 351 or 292, something out of the 60's or 70's if possible. Would appreciate some ideas on this. Thank you.

Anything is possible with a little work. Its ten times easier if you have a two wheel drive cause you only have to match transmission and engine. You don't have to fool with transfer cases

Good luck with that. Totally different engine setup. You`ll basically have to gut everything under the hood, install custom engine mounts, new exhaust, new tranny, redo ALL of the engine electrical, rebuilt the original engine because a 50 year old carbed engine wont be in mint condition. Plus you wont have as much power with an older engine like that. If it even fits under the hood. Not worth it at all.
P.s. I really hope it isn`t 4 wheel drive. Because that's a different front axle setup too.

Actually doing a carbed motor would be much easier than doing an older fuel injected motor. Theres a lot you can get rid of.

As been said is it 2wd or 4wd?

As for motor mounts you could use 4.6 mounts for most motors.

Dont be scared to do whatever YOU want to do. Just dont go over your skill level because thats how projects get started and never finished.

It also depends on how nice you want it to be, and what you plan to use the truck for. It's not that hard to put a carbed motor in and make it go. If you want air conditioning and all your gauges to work, or have something relatively efficient, that's a different story.

Thanks for all the answers. It is a 2wheel drive and the best vehicle I've ever owned. I'm 63 and I spent half my life in my Dad's garage. Plans are to get it running again and drive it until I"m too old. After that, a grandkid will probably wind up with it. Thanks again.
