Default Engine noise @ 400k...

Hey guys first time posting here. Anyways, I have a 2001 f150 supercrew 5.4.. It's completely stock as far as motor and trans goes. My grandfather bought the truck new and had driven it daily until he got a new f150. It has 400897 miles as of today and last week it start ticking! It doesn't make noise while idling only when accelerating and once it hits like 3k on the tach it's much quieter but as soon as it shifts its much louder. Any ideas on what it could be?

Exhaust manifold studs could of gone, or the tired motor could of just had enough!!! Be happy you got 400k out of it.

I would be having 'rainbows', coming out of my butt if I had a motor go over 400,000 miles.

It's most likely due to the fact that it has 400K

How much would you be willing to spend to fix a 400k motor?

anyone?

anyone?

Beuler?

At any time, any day, it could self-destruct. Its past reasonable expectation of trouble free life, even with impeccable maintenance. Every day it starts and runs is a good day. Just like a 95 yr old man.

there has been documented 5.4 lasting 1.2 million miles. Hard to say what your problem is without being there listening to get. Does the CEL come on? that might help you narrow it down. Get a scan tool and see if it has ant stored codes.

If it isn't doing it while idling, that would lead me to believe it's not ticking valves or a cracked exhaust manifold... Could be the bolts for the torque converter are loose and hitting something... Which wouldn't be far-fetched if it is the original trans with 400k+ miles.

A video would help wonders in our armchair diagnosis... At this point, any guess is as good as mine.

I'd fix it just for the pride of having a truck with that many miles lol. At that point, most people wouldn't even put gas into the thing because they think it isn't worth it. If the tranny has lasted this long without a rebuild, then it had to have been treated very well and not dogged on in its life. Fix it man, and brag on! Your grandpa will be proud if you keep that thing going.

check the plug tightness. another thing if you look at it at night in the dark you can usually see flashing from exhaust leaks and they can have a knock sound..

hard to say with what we have to go on, very good suggestions so far can you take it to the same shop your grandfather used to have it diagnosed if so I'd do that, it might not be as bad as you think.
