Engine noise
I have a 1997 F-150 4X4 with a 4.2L V-6. Several years ago my son and I rebuilt the engine after a head gasket failed. The truck went with my 18 year old son when he moved onto greener pastures.
I recently was returned the truck as it was not big, loud or powerful enough for him. It has a very noticeable tapping/clunking sound coming from the engine. The engine runs very smooth without a miss. When coming to a stop the engine RPM drops to a point where it feels and sounds like the engine will stall. I've checked the valve train and all is well and the noise sounds like it is coming from within the engine.
I'm suspecting the balance shaft, but I have no idea what can or has gone wrong with it. Any suggestions and advise is welcome.
Thanks,
