Default Engine bogs

If you take off and don't try to accelerate to quickly the engine runs great. Once you try to press the gas pedal a little more it falls flat on its face until you let up on the gas pedal. It has normal power until you press just a little to much. It will limp around town and if you are careful with the pedal it will eventually get up to speed. It feels like it isn't getting enough gas. We need to drive it up mountains with a trailer so this definitely won't work.

The truck sat for a few years with a blown engine. We put a used engine in a few months ago and replaced the fuel filter at the same time. We replaced the fuel filter again yesterday and it was full of crude so we are pulling the bed to check the screen on the fuel pump. I suspect it's clogged but my question is, does anyone have any ideas beyond a plugged screen on the pump? The truck is not throwing any codes by the way.

Thanks for any input.

does it rev really high and lose power? Because mine is exactly the same and when i floor it revs extremely high and loses all power. I initially assumed it was a transmission problem so i am just going to go ahead and rebuild mine for the experience. It’s probably just a worn clutch. But i believe it to be a fuel problem as well. Ill probably replace fuel injectors and fuel pump.

Fuel problems are always a pain because you never know what the problem can be.

Yes it's the oil using 1997 5.4. Sorry, forgot to put that info in the first post.

We took off the bed and pulled the fuel pump. The screen was caked with rust and gunk. We cleaned the screen, reassembled and took it for a drive. The plugged screen was the problem and runs great now. Dropped the tank to have it cleaned at the radiator shop and should take care of the loss of power problem.

Now I'm wondering if when it bogged did that create a vacuum possible blowing the oil out somewhere or sucking it somewhere it shouldn't be...........

I guess we'll see next week when it's back together.
