Electric Window Troubles
'97 F150 XLT Std. Cab.
My windows work perfectly in P and N, but the driver window does not work in R or D, and the passenger window is unreliable in R and D. The driver window never works, the passenger window is hit & miss on whether it works or not. I have not discovered what I do differently that makes the passenger window change behavior.
If I want the window to go down, I have to shift into N then I can put the window down. The window goes up under all conditions. The problem with going down started with having the headlights being turned on, but the problem recently changed to lights off -- the trouble has gone from happening only when the lights are on to happening all of the time. My trouble is not the window regulator or motor because the windows are fine in P and N, and they go up whenever they are told to. I'm thinking the window switch is okay too because the windows are fine until I go out of P & N.
This problem has me stumped because there is no logic in the windows working based upon the location of the gear selector. Why would the windows care that the gear selector is in in P or N, and how do they know?
I reported that the trouble changed, I had an aftermarket that failed (this is the one that gave me trouble ONLY when the headlamps are on and the gear shift is in R or D), so I had it replaced, and the problem changed to any time, not just with lights on. I understand that I need to look at the car alarm, what I need help with is, which wires. The Car Alarm guy says that his stuff does not connect to the windows or the transmission/gear shift lever.
What I do not have is a schematic of the window circuit that shows how the windows tie into the gear selection.

It was my experience that when weird electrical things started happening it was due to the GEM. The windows tie into that. The gear thing sounds like a red herring. I know when my GEM went my windows didn’t work and for some reason the dome light came on when I hit the brake pedal. Had any windscreen leaks lately?

Thanks for the schematic, I have somewhere to start now.
I don't know what color the herring is, but the symptom set absolutely includes the windows only go down in P or N, they go up in any gear selection. Manual Down or Auto Down are the same. You can take it to the bank that the driver door does not work in R or D, the passenger door is spotty, sometimes it works and sometimes not. If I set the gear to P or N, then both windows work properly. These are the main symptoms. Maybe not the cause, but the symptom set changes with the gear selection.
I can hear relays clicking randomly from inside of the dashboard, I'm going to say that the relay noises come from the vicinity of the brake pedal, or above the clutch pedal on vehicles that have one. Where does this GEM module live?
ON THE PDF
I see grounds that come out to control the One Touch Down Relay and the ACC Delay Relay. What I cannot see is if the ground that comes from the GEM can be disrupted by other stuff that is going on inside of the GEM. The problem is not the window circuit itself because all functions work in P or N, but not in R or D. The ground to the relay that causes it to work might be a problem, are there diagrams of the inside of the GEM? I see a thing called, Battery Saver Relay that gets a ground from the GEM, too.
