Electric fans
Hi guys, new to the forum. I've owned my 1999 F150 with nascar pkg since new and have finally started to mod it - better late than never eh? I've got my eye on the Troyer Performance electric fan kit, but just wondered if anyone had a homebrewed solution that was less costly? It appears the kit could be made for half the price.

Dual fans is a waste of time and more complicated (IN MY OPINION ) I used a single 18" 2 speed fan out of a 4.6 cougar or you can use a mark 8 fan and a Hayden controller from oriellys. Whole thing cost less than $100 I've had it in for over a year and hauled a 33' travel trailer up north 550 miles and had no issues. Just my $.02

Thanks guys.
I was under the impression that our alternators weren't rated high enough to support the draw from a dual speed fan. JollyRoger - from some of your older posts it sounds like you only have one controller for low speed and use a toggle switch for high speed (rarely?).
I think that is the benefit of the dual fan set up with dual controllers - less draw.
Speaking of controllers, it sounds like no one really likes their controllers
If the Troyer kit works - I might be money/time ahead to just buy that. However I do like how well that Windstar fan fits in the bay.

In a sense you are correct, I have a relay set up as a switch I don't actually flip a switch. When I turn in my a/c the relay completes the circuit to turn on the high speed. I have an sct livewire ts to monitor my systems and all is well. The high amp draw is only momentary as the fan starts then it is reduced significantly.
I was only throwing out an option for consideration as you inquired about lower cost options. If money were not a factor I would probably go with the troyer kit myself. Good luck with your search.

i bought a eBay kit. i live in Texas and boy the summers here are hot. with the AC on the fans struggle to cool in stop and go trafick and have made my motor run very hot before. now when im moving on the freeway a/c blasting and radio blaring the alternator keeps up and i don't even need the fans when im on the freeway. now the most noticeable gains are on the highway in my opinion. the efans sure do free up a lot of room in the engine bay though. i can stand in the engine bay haha
I've had the clutched fan out on 3 occasions now and I just hate the thing. It looks like turn of the century technology, it's damn near 10lbs and unwieldly, I have to extract the shroud and fan as one, just to get them both out easily - and then I'm usually cutting my arms/hands up in the process. I just hate it and want it gone.
Being able to free up room and power is the goal. But also having room to clutter the bay back up with a Vortech S-Trim is going to be nice!

There's really not much benefit to efans, besides more room in the engine bay. It's not like your really going to notice the maybe 4hp you'll get, at least I didn't because it's only 4.
I had an actual water temp pillar gauge and the efans could keep it the same temps as stock in the cooler months, but during the hot summer months it would heat up, even without towing anything.
If you do decide on efans, try not to get stuck in traffic during the summer. Stock temp is 205, summer months with efans you'll be seeing 230 at times, not worth it in my opinion. Which is why I took that junk off my truck, and it's laying in my basement.
