Default drop in replacement transmission

Since im new to this truck, and new to working on cars in general, please forgive me all the newbie questions that ill be asking.

I bought a high mileage truck, and I thought it would be wise to keep an eye on craigslist for transmissions, so that I can rebuild one while the old one still works.

The question is, which one will work as a drop in, or which one will work with only minor modifications?

I currently have a1997 4.6 auto 2wd Xl long bed. The trans is a 4r70w.
I see these come up out of mustangs, or other fords, but just because it is a 4r70w does not automatically mean that it will work right?

Thanks.

Keep an eye out for ones out of the same gen truck, cause the ones from the mustang may have different gear ratios. There are plenty of our gen trucks, I'm sure one will pop up in time.

A 4r75e showed up locally. but this is out of a 2004. do you guys foreseen a lot of problems swapping this in? I'm reading up a bit, and it looks like an OSS sensor swap and maybe a flash is all that is required?

Edit: Argh. it's out of a 4x4. I'm guessing this will complicate things.
