Default door mirrors

Hi All

Slowly working my way through the odds and ends on my new (to me) truck and the next problem I have found is that neither of the mirrors move using the switch

I've found the mini fuse under the dash (#4) and as far as I can tell it's not blown

I've also worked out how to remove the switch but at the moment I've not found my meter to check for voltages etc

Is there any other fuse or relay to check whilst I'm at it?

And would it be std Black & red for voltage?

Thanks

Adrian.

First thing to check is the switch itself.

Cheers JP

Still couldn't find my multimeter last night so I've ordered a replacement one, should be with me in a couple of days...

Is there a best way to test it or will it just be a case of looking for continuity as it is operated?

Make sure you check to see if you getting power to everything you can use just a test light and keep the wires plugged in to the switch, I believe it's yellow, but one of the wires has power all the time the other wires only have power when you use the buttons.

Thanks for that, I might pop out and get a cheap meter sometime today too

As a side issue, the overhead console display doesn't seem to do anything either, could they be linked somehow?

I'm wondering if, when the truck had bits done to convert it for use here in the UK, they might have either tapped into something or blown something they didn't mean to?

The overhead you refer to is the display above the mirror, correct?
That display is primarily a compass and thermometer. Depending on where the truck originated and was stored often will dictate the lifespan of it.

I live in Arizona, trucks not kept under shade or cover will often have the heat effect the circuits and "burn out" the display prematurely. While living in Michigan for 13 years I've also seen extended periods of subzero weather have similar effect.

It's not linked to the mirrors other than they both run off the electrical system. My bet would be the mirror switch is bad since you checked the fuses. Have you removed the door panel and checked the connector plug? It's possible that could be loose, disconnected or just not making good contact.

You can download the fuse panel diagrams off the Ford Motor Company website.

What aspects of the truck needed to be changed so it could be operated in the UK? You have peaked my curiousity.

Never bought the cheap meter today as it was almost twice the price of the decent one I ordered last night...

I have found a new switch on ebay that I can order if needed, postage to the UK is pretty much the same as the cost of switch but we are used to that.. lol

JP,

To get it registered in the UK is pretty much just lighting changes

Make sure the headlights are pointing in the right direction
Add side lights to come on in the 1st switch position (some get drilled into the light, some under it like mine have been done)
Make sure the front corner lights only flash (Orange) as indicators
Add side repeater indicators to the front wings
Change the rear indicator circuit so that it uses the reverse lights as indicators (with orange bulbs) since we are not allowed red flashing indicators here in the UK apart from a few early vehicle exceptions (1960s & earlier I think)
Add a red rear fog light circuit (fitted next to the towbar on mine)

Then send it for an MOT (our version of your inspection)

That it pretty much what is required to get it on the road

Funnily enough, over here, a reversing light is not actually required for the vehicles MOT, it it's fitted then it must work but if it's not fitted then it doesn't matter

The truck has had one fitted next to the towbar as I would rather people know what direction I'm trying to go... lol

Cheers for the advice guys, as soon as my meter arrives, I'll keep this updated with my progress and any other questions I have

I know one member on here went with an AUS tail light conversion that has a separate yellow blinker and a reverse light if that is more your style.

Let us know what you find when you get the meter in but for neither mirror to work in any direction my bet is on the switch.

Good luck!

Have you checked Amazon.com?
I never had any luck on eBay, find better prices and distribution links with Amazon in my experience.
