Default Do I really need the 4X4?

I’m looking to buy a 2000(ish) f-150 as a second vehicle. It will likely only be driven 3-4000 miles a year, used as a utility vehicle at my cabin (launch the boat, dump runs, etc) and as a back-up vehicle, so I want it to last 10+ years, with minimal maintenance issues. I live in southern Ontario so we do get some snow. 4x4’s are a bit harder to come by, command a higher price, and (more importantly to me), seem to have more maintenance issues (with the 4X4). Will I be okay in a 4x2 with a good set of tires (& some sand in the back for winter) or should I go for the 4X4. I know there can be lots of personal opinion on this, but would like some practical advice from current owners. Thanks in advance.

4x4 is one of those things where you think youll never need it, and when you do, you kick yourself several times for not getting it.

I look at it like condoms, it better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it.

I have always had a 2wd truck here in Northern Indiana, granted in probably doesnt snow as much here as it does in ONT, but we do get some snow. I think it depends on the driver.

I have a 4x4, it definately comes in handy. It gives you peace of mind for sure, just in case you need it. I'd get one with it.

I have a 2005 F150 FX4,this is My first 4x4.Have had Dodge and Chevy's and also a couple of F150's TWD's.
We can get big snows in NW Indiana(lake effect) never thought I'd need a fwd vehicle but after having the FX4 it's tough to drive My STX twd in the winter.

I've had my 98 since July and can think of at least half a dozen time i've used the 4wd to my advantage let alone the use in the snow we had last week coupled with the unplowed roads. Its worth it.

If you can afford it, why not?

If it's something you think you wont be able to afford if it breaks, then don't do it. I bought my 4x4 and im terrified of the time when something breaks because i'm 16 and most likely wont be able to fix it very quickly.
