Default Disable 4WD

1997 F150

I know there is a lot of information on issues with the 4wd. I am experiencing many of the problems mentioned in previous topics, no need to rehash those here. I simply want to disable the 4wd to allow my daughter to get to school and back.

Right now the truck is in 2wd and I want to keep it there:
- Can I unplug the 4wd solenoid?
or
- Can I unplug the transfer case motor?

If so is one option better? Thanks in advance!

Just remove the SHORT front drive shaft. Take it off completely. While its off you can remove, clean and grease the ujoints just in case you want to reattach in the future.

Why?
what problem you have?

327,000 mi on mine with no desire to disconnect 4 wd.......

You can unplug shift motor, remove it, pull relays, pull fuses, etc
Front disconnect requires right vacuum to keep shift fork in right place......but you could drive 30,000 mi with only front axle engaged and never know it.....front driveshaft would spin is all...maybe 0.1 -0.1 mpg

Yes , just like you said. The vac solenoids and the shift motor. You need to do both. Like you said, make sure everything is in 2wd first.

Pull that GEM apart and clean it up when you get the chance....and seal the leak of course.
