Default Dead 4.6L. Possible solutions?

Hey I have a 97 F-150 supercab with the 4.6L. Yesterday on my way to work (10 miles all highway), I made it a few miles from work and all of a sudden all my gauges went dead, no radio, or any signals or lights, but the truck was running fine so I made it to work. I parked, shut it off and tried starting it but it was completely dead. When I got off I went and tried starting it for S&G and it started just fine and everything worked. I tried making it home but made it 3 miles and my battery gauge started dropping fast and as soon as it hit dead all my gauges started going and everything died again. Except this time the motor started losing power and eventually died.

Anybody have an idea of what would cause this? My thought are possible the alternator going out?

Alternator? Make sure the battery is fully charged, start the engine and check the voltage at the battery. With engine running it should be approx. 14 volts. If not you'll likely need an alternator. I had exact same symptoms last week. I replaced the alt. All ok now.

Mine did the exact same thing, luckily had a second alternator in my garage, easy job to do tho, only took me about 45 minutes on the side of the road in the dark
