Default Custom Steering Linkage?

I was browsing through my dads speedway magazine and found myself wondering...is it possible to build a custom front end steering linkage? if so anyone ever do/attempt this? it seemed cheaper than buying all new tie rods, idler arm and pitman arm. Would it be strong enough though for my truck/hold up to winter driving in a great lake region winter. Any help/input is greatly appreciated, it's a 97 4.2L 4x2. thanks in advance guys.

if you can mill out a ball stud and a socket on your own, then please let me know.

my buddy did it to his ranger when he built his 4-link.. all he did was buy the end pieces and took heavy pipe and cut and welded... Its mostly an off road truck though so i don't know about a daily driver
