I highly recommend using a radiator flush chemical. You'd be surprised how much crap that stuff gets out. I have to use it on the heater core of my parents Taurus every fall. I've used a couple brands, and found that the Zerex stuff works best.

I flush it every 3 years (habit). I've done it both ways, pre-mix after flushing w/distilled water (3 or 4 times, - it's cheap and reliable ) or mixing in distilled. I think it's working out. 330,000 miles and the factory original heater core is still flowing coolant. Knock on wood... :thumbsup:

You know, other than the stupid tube that goes under the intake, I really like the cooling system in these trucks. Mine has a leak somewhere's that's not hitting the ground. I can just smell it from time to time. The radiator and hoses are only a couple years old, but I kind of suspect it's tank on the radiator again.

It's driving me nuts not being able to work on my vehicles right now.

Thank you Frank for your detailed reply...I appreciate it. I assume my 1998 came from the factory with the standard green ethylene glycol mix, but who knows what was put in it after.

A complete flush with distilled and 50/50 green, I'm good.

If you don't want to take my advice, that's fine. The thing is guy, is if any of that other stuff remains in there you are chancing mixing incompatible coolants. Just using the "standard green ethylene glycol mix" is going to chance that if the PO used Dex Cool. Using the universal, or as Frank said "use with any color" coolant, you insure yourself that there won't be an issue.

My advice... Don't just use the standard anti-freeze. It won't mix with Dex. The universal stuff is still green and still an ethylene glycol based product. However, it is able to mix with all coolants. Both Autozone and O'Reilly have house brands of the stuff, and it's seriously only like a dollar more per bottle.

If you have two block plugs, you can get it all out. If you have just one on the drivers, it may be more difficult. I just have the one, so I flushed the snot out of it lol. Yea I'd hate having the wrong stuff in there, IF that's the case....it use to be.

Can't mix tho, it can gel on yuh. Not sure how much of it would have to remain in order for that to occur. May be better to use the universal, - not sure what I would do. If the universal meets or exceeds previous recommendations.... If not...

Anyway, here's something for yuh. They can be a PITA burp/bleed. This is from the TSB's, -

I went to extremes with mine in the past. On one occasion, I removed the rear wheels, dropped the rear of the truck down, then lifted the front end up..high lol. Had a stubborn air pocket.

The last time I didn't need to do that. Just in case, may come in handy. :thumbsup:

I came here and originally asked "what coolant came from the factory in a 1998 Ford F150 XL 2WD 5.4 Triton?" Never got a straight answer. That's fine, maybe no one knows.

I thought that by doing a drain, fill with DI, drive for 15-20 minutes, cool, repeat, and then fill with 50/50 green coolant would be fine. I'm not opposed to using a flush chemical, or the "universal" stuff that will mix IF it is Dex-Cool in there. Not even sure it is. May be just crud.

Can someone link me a "universal" type that would be compatible with Dex-Cool? I just thought that was more marketing hype than fact.

It's not that I was not taking your advice, I just didn't understand that there really was a "universally compatible" type. I'm fine with that. Shoot me a few links to the universal Zerex, Prestone or whatever and it's all good.

The first one in the book.

It came with Ford Premium Engine coolant (green in color)

Part # E2FZ-19549-AA/ESE-M97B44-A spec. (one in the same)

That's what they shipped with.

Maybe you should of asked what color did it ship with lol.

There's only two choices, you must have figured it out to be green by now. Or were you confused about the spec number?
