Correct coolant for my 1998 5.4 Triton

I searched and am getting conflicting results. The book says "E2FZ-19549-AA
or B, ESE-M97B44-A Premium Cooling System Fluid". So I went here:

https://www.fcsdchemicalsandlubricants.com/main/product.asp?product=Premium%20Concentrated%20Antif reeze/Coolant&category=A/C%20and%20Engine%20Cooling%20Products

That states ESE-M97B44-A, a standard green ethylene glycol based coolant, which matches above. The issue is the fluid in the reservoir looks orange. Not sure if it's Dex-Cool or just nasty old stuff. I just bought the truck used with 83K.

Any way to verify? Sure don't want to mix. I just want to dump the old, and put in the proper stuff.

So, what coolant came from the factory in a 1998 Ford F150 XL 2WD 5.4 Triton?

TIA

Nobody?!

Just use the universal stuff. That's what a lot of people are using in these now. I personally like the Valvoline Max Life product. It will work in anything.

I have the owners manual. My question is what coolant came from the factory in a 1998 Ford F150 XL 2WD 5.4 Triton?

The owners manual says "E2FZ-19549-AA
or B, ESE-M97B44-A Premium Cooling System Fluid". What does that mean? Green stuff or other?

Again, the issue is the fluid in the reservoir looks orange. Not sure if it's Dex-Cool or just nasty old stuff. I bought it used so no history.

I guess I can do a flush and use the standard green stuff.

Use the universal. I promise. It will be fine no matter what you've got.

I'll just do a good flush and do a 50/50 green ethylene glycol mix with distilled water and call it a day I guess. Might as well replace the thermostat too.

That sounds like a good plan. I just use the stuff that says "Use with any color coolant" (or words to than effect). and have never had problems. I really think that the most important consideration is making sure your cooling system is clean with clean coolant. In the old days, you could only buy straight anti freeze and you had to mix it with water. The stuff had rust inhibitors in it but they only lasted about a year. If you did not change it every year, your block would rust during the second year and you started having problems. If you didn't use water that was free of minerals, your radiator would clog up after a few years. Today, you have coolant that lasts for 4 or more years and the 50/50 mix has the water in it that doesn't have minerals that clog your radiator. You end up having a lot fewer problems and rarely do I see an engine overheating from dirty coolant like they did back before 1980. American know how and product improvement is the greatest. You are definitely doing the right thing with flushing your system and adding new coolant. The coolant you suggested should work fine.
