Cold starting problem
Hi all
I have a 2002 F-150 2wd auto with a 4.2. When it gets below 10 degrees I turn the key an only get a single click. I have replaced the battery and solenoid. Someone told me it probably is my electrical cable to the starter. If this is true, then why does it only happen when it is really cold out. Also, twice I juggled the shift lever and it started shortly after. Don't know if that is a coincidence or my NSS is bad or needs adjusted.
Thanks
Jim

Sounds like it could be the transmission range sensor located on the transmission next to the linkage. i am suspecting that a lot of dirt has built up around it and it is not properly engaged when you have it in park. if it does not signal that your transmission is in park, it will not allow your truck to start. you can look at it and see if it is damaged. you can also see if it seems to engage properly when you have a friend engage the shift lever in park. if not, you can adjust sensor. To know it is adjusted properly, put it in reverse and the back up lights should go on and you should not be able to start it. if everything seems to be working properly, you most likely have a bad sensor. To test it
properly, the only way i know is to take it to the dealer.
