I have a clucking sound on the left front of my 98. It sounds metal to metal kinda like a loose hubcap or a bad bearing plate on a fwd car. Any ideas ?

 

Upper or lower ball joint more than likely.

 

Sway bar link is broken.

 

Or the bushing.

Sway bar link issues are usually described as rattles though.
Ball joints are usually described as clunking, especially over bumps.

 

I guess it's more like putting a rock into a tin can sound

 

I have that same problem and the thing that goes around the leaf spring (that keeps them in line) is loose, check yours. I don't know how to solve the issue, I beat on it with a hammer until it was flat and couldn't move but it still does. I may just use caulking or something that will glue it down but will be flexible.

Other than that is can be a lot of things, as covered the sway bar end links, shock could be loose, you could have a screw behind the door panel lol. It could be that a bolt isn't tight enough and the washer is rattling around too.

EDIT: Another thing I just thought of is jack up the front of the vehicle and push/pull on the wheel to test your wheel bearing, ball joints, and ti-rods.
