Question Click in steering column/panel when reversing

'02 F150 SuperCrew

I hear a prominent clicking sound in the region of the steering column/instrument panel when I turn the steering wheel, but only in reverse. It sound like a relay switching and isn't regular, i.e. doesn't always click at the same angle of steering wheel rotation or at a consistent rate. Not related to the turn signals being on or off.

I don't know the anatomy of the systems well enough to troubleshoot. Any thoughts what might make such a sound in those circumstances that I can investigate?

Don't know what it is either but I have noticed mine does it sometimes too

It does seem to be a relay though as I have noticed it doing it whilst reversing straight (ish)

On mine, it seems to be as I take my foot off the brake and press on the gas pedal

You know AdrianP, you might be on to something there. Maybe the connection to steering is just erroneous perception on my part. It does seem like it could be associated with pedal state which would make so much more sense. I'll test that next time I'm in the car. Still not sure what would actually be clicking though. I'll peek at the schematics and see if there is some sort of switch/relay in the pedal systems to account for it.

My 03 does the same thing very rarely, too. Noticed it about a year ago while backing up in my driveway one evening with the steering wheel straight. As I was approaching the garage and tapped the break pedal, I heard a slight clicking sound come from behind the instrument panel, like a switch making contact on and off. Reverse lights worked and everything else was working as it should, but each time I would tap the break pedal I could hear a soft click. Don't think it has anything to do with the actual breaks on the truck. Pads, rotors, hardware, lines and so on are all good. Has done this three or four times since that first occurrence and only does it while tapping the break pedal in reverse. Not losing sleep over this seemingly minor issue, but would be kinda curious to know what causes it to very rarely occur.

I've been paying closer attention to the symptoms and can confirm it happens when the steering wheel is being turned in reverse. Seems to be unrelated to brake pedal usage. If I track it down I'll post the resolution here.
