Click into gear
I have a 01 f150 that you can here what seems to be a click when put into gear. The sound seems to be coming possibly from the driveshaft. The u joints seem ok when you twist it. Just looking for thoughts? Also was thinking of changing the transfer case fluid what can I run in the transfer case?

Went searching a bit, and for the most part, you've got a pretty uncommon problem. Most of the time its the U-joints, though you did say that they felt fine. One way to check is to put your foot on the brake and shift it from park to reverse to neutral to drive. If its the U-joints, you'll hear the noise from the motor torque taking up the slack. If not, I did find this:
"Hey guys, I have a 97 ford F-150 4wd. It also clunks when I put from park to reverse or drive. I eliminate the clunk by taking the driveline off, and putting some wheel bearing grease in the inside splines of the front slipyoke! This is the part that slides up into the rear of the tranny housing, or if you have a 4wd, it is in the transfer case. I grease this about ever 3 or 4 months or whenever it starts clunking! There are a few CHEVY guys that I talked to that have the same problem, and they took a rubber ball from a jack game and pushed it up in to the rear slip yoke. They say it lasts about 20,000 miles or so, before they have to replace it. This is just here, but hey. I have never tried it, but it does sound reasonable enough though."
I made a few edits so its easier to read... I found out also that there was a TSB on the 97's concerning something among this. Don't take my word on the fact that it applies to yours, as 97-98's were different than 99-03's. I've heard it can be a clunk, or even a clink, but the noise is a parking pawl gear binding. The pawl gear is what basically locks the transmission in when you put it in park. Putting it in park is the same thing as putting it in neutral, though the pawl gear drops in and you get that "clink" noise from the binding. The gear simply gets stuck, and "pops" out. Its all I've found for now, but I'll keep searching and keep you updated.
