Hello everyone, my 99 f150 has seen better days and is in need of a touch up as the clear coat is flaking on the hood and fenders. Is it possible to just sand it down and clean it to remove the remaining clear coat and just reapply it or will it need to be repainted? If so, can I use the spray can of clear?
You can get spray cans of clear that are catalyzed. This is the only actual hard clear. You don't want the lacquer stuff it's soft and will peel off in no time.
However the shipping charges for that 2000 catalyzed clear stuff have really driven the prices up.
If you like your truck and it's in good shape and it's low enough miles that you want to keep it several years considered getting it painted
If you do all the prep work, Wash it, dry it..... And tape it off in the parking lot at fact o bake.... They will shoot clear on it for you for pretty cheap probably

Thank you for the reply. I’m eventually going to get it painted but it won’t be till many many years down the road. I plan on keeping it for a long time due to sentimental value.

That sentimental value starts fading about the time everything starts falling apart....... I kept a toyota 4wd for 23 years..... But eventually it turned into such a hassle that I let it go. These trucks hold up pretty good they don't nickel and dime you to death. But that's so far at 20 years, eventually plastic crap on the inside that can't be replaced will start breaking.
