Check engine light is on

I put in a new alternator on my 1997 Ford F150. All of a sudden, the check engine light is on. Any idea why? Do I just need to take it in for service?

take it somewhere auto zone ?? to get a code. then find out what the code indicates.

^^^ hes got a good idea thats what id do and if not tell them to clear it nd if it pops back up find out what the code means
