Check engine light

I have a code for a misfire in cylinder 3. What are some simple things to check before I jump to big conclusions and waste money. I have a 1997 lariat 4.6

pull your plug and take a look at it. could also check your coil

I have a code that says misfire cylinder 1. I have replaced the coil at cylinder 1 and all the plugs. The light went off for about two weeks and it came back on with the same code. Not sure what to do now. I have the 5.4L. Help!!
