Exclamation charging problem, 3 shops cannot figure out

1997 5.4. new alternator and battery.
will not charge. Can make it charge if I run a jumper to the plug on firewall that comes from the alternator. I have taken it to 2 ford dealerships and one private mech with no remedy. All 3 shops say alternator is good, but I can only get it to charge the battery with a jumper from positive to the plug on the firewall that goes over to the top of the alternator. They are telling me it is some sort of trigger wire that switches the regulator on and off.
Please help if you can. thanks

I need to know whether your truck is an supercab and manual or auto tranny, I am looking at wiring diagrams.

Default Charging wiring diagram.

Actually they are all the same here is the charging wiring diagram, looks like there is a "MEGA FUSE" between the voltage regulator B+ and the Battery.

my brothers truck wasn't charging properly he had a new alternator and battery. it ended up the fuse had a hairline crack in it, you could barely see it. it took the tech awhile to figure it out at the dealership

Default Checked fuses

Wow! Thanks for the diagram.
I checked continuity on the mega fuse and the inline mini. Both seem ok.
The only way I can get it to charge the battery is jumping the + battery to the green/ w red stripe wire that comes from the alternator.
Could that megafuse be bad, even if it has continuity?
I appreciate all of your help. Trying to get it fixed so my son can use as his first vehicle.
Thanks

Default solved!

Thanks to the diagram you provided. I tracked down the 10 amp fuse that the green/ w red wire led. It is in the cab fuse box. Shows it to be for air bag diagnostic and instrument cluster. I changed this fuse and it started to charge.
Thanks so much for your help!

Since the instrument cluster fuse was bad, were the instrument panel lights out?
