Most are a 6 disc changer (audiovox) in the center console or behind the rear seat in some. The head can be either a cassette, plain, or CD/cassette. It depends on how it was ordered. Not all heads will fit the plug for the changer. Also, not every one with the correct plug is set up to work, either. It depends on how it was programmed.

AK: The "programming" you're talking about is the head unit, right?

Pending AK's reply, and if you're wired for it and want to go this route, I think I still have the factory (cassette-only) head and 6-disc changer (console-mounted) from my '99. The changer mounting bracket, trim ring, should be here, too.

Yes on the head. The GEN 11 and up especially. With the GEN 10's, it is usually the amp functionality or in some cases, if the radio will work with steering wheel controls (Gators, SDs, Excursions, etc) They use the same heads as our f150's but some have more features enabled.
