Default can a 1997 accept an inline 6 engine

can a 97 f-150 with a bad 4.2 v6 be replaced with an inline 6?

I don't know how much room is left if you use a 6 cylinder Inline, or a V10. I've heard of a V10 in the hole, a couple smaller diesels, but not a 300. The bell housing is the same for the 4.2 Essex and the 300 I6, so you have that much going for you.

I think the older 5.0 is the same bolt pattern also.

Anything can fit with customization...

You might get a more clear answer if you say what inline 6 you're wanting to use. I can think of some tiny motors that would fit without a problem, but probably won't move your truck.
