Default A/c issue

I have a 2002 F-150 XLT that is having an issue with its A/C. The air is coming out cold as normal however it is only blowing out the defroster. I know that this is the default setting when the vacuum is bad or is going out, one of the two. But I am unsure of how I need to go about and troubleshooting this thing and how much this is going to run me to replace. I know this is something that I could probably do in my garage but maybe you all maybe able to confirm that or perhaps make me rethink about doing it myself. Are there any other idea's I should consider looking at? How do I trouble shoot the vacuum? How much will it run me? And last, how difficult will it be to replace it if it is the vacuum and is there anything I should know about before I tear into it to replace this sucker?

Thanks for your guys help and I am eager to see what you come up with. Thanks again!
