Buying Used, how many miles are TOO many assuming proper maintenance?
I'm looking for a used F150 and I found a 2003 Super Crew XLT that looks very clean. The owner claims to have his own Auto Repair shop and says that he babied this truck mechanically.
The problem is it has 200k miles. This worries me as I know once you get past a certain point you're just waiting for things to die on you. Is this still the case if it was very well maintained?
Should I look elsewhere simply due to the mileage?

It would depend on repairs/maintenance performed as well as price. There is no set time period when things will fail. Some trucks make it to 300k no problem while others are in the scrap yard at 100k. Luck of the draw along with care for the vehicle.
200k miles is what I would consider nearing the end of life for original trans and engine. Plus the differentials will be pretty worn. If everything is original.
If he's only asking a $1000-4000 and it's in good shape, it'd be worth the risk. If he's asking $8k+ I'd tell him to get bent.

Impractical
Maintenance is king. I bought an '86 BMW 635CSi in great shape with 253K on the odo. Strong compression, neither leaked nor burned oil.
I bought my current daily, the F150, with 224K miles. Runs perfect, cosmetically very good. I'd take it in a heartbeat over one with 124K that had been neglected.

Check the rust issue first. I'd crawl under this truck and make sure NOTHING is rusted. If any area is starting to rust, there will be others. You may not see them, they are there, somewhere. Just look at the red one doing the rebuild on the body in the Forum. It looked great, but the rust is unbelievable.
Of course, mechanical maintenance is a priority. See what records the seller has and if he has a good list of repairs, that could be a bonus. It would show the things that have been repaired. Don't take his word for what has been done. Look yourself or find a reputable mechanic to look for you. Don't use one of his friends or garages. Use your own guy, just to be sure.

I wouldn't look at anything over 150k for a daily driver. Most of these trucks run to 200k+ with proper maintenance. My truck has 170k with no major problems but all trucks are different as well as how they are treated.

I just recently bought a 99 with approx 290, 000 km aprox 175, 000 miles, i paid a fair amount, and needed manifolds and a few other very small things(headlight bulb, rear sensor) but.... here is the reason, this was a one owner, that was more than meticuliosly matained, he had it undercoated every year from new(had receipts), trans/transfer case fluild changed every 30k(18000 miles) with synthetic since new, axles every 50 with synthetic, oil every 5k with synthetic. the front end has been changed 3 times...not because of wear but maintence, this truck has 37,642$ of Hard copy reciepts than came with truck, and he said that was probaly only 75% the rest have been left in jeans gone through wash ect. ect. paid him and drove it home 4 hrs at 75, drives like new. i'm not just repeating what he told me, the receipts that came with the truck spoke volumes, so if your looking at high mileage trucks receipts count.

You won't catch me buying from someone that owns a shop,that means he knows how to rig stuff to work for awhile
