Default Broken Timing Chain?

1997, 4.2

Cranking engine creates a sound like someone whacking a chain or similar object against a metal housing. of course, the truck won't start.

Is this engine an "interference" engine?

If the timing chain is broken, what are the implications?

Looking for a video or illustrated instructions on replacing.

Thanks,

Default

Yep, its interference

You can tear it down, get valve cover and timing covers off, but there is chance you may have damaged cam, piston, valves, broken lash adjusters, etc.

There was recent thread a few week ago where guy found same thing, plastic guide broke off, jammed in chain, jumped the timing, self destructed
