Default Break problems....

My husband's 1997 F150 break lights stopped working properly. If you just barely touch the breaks they come on, but if you push on the break pedal further to stop they go off. We were told it probably was the break light switch. We replaced that and now they still will not come on, but now wont even shift into gear!! Can someone give us some suggestions please of what we can do now? Cant even tow it if we cant get it in gear. Thanks.

A couple of things to consider, need a test light or a volt meter. See if there is power at the brake switch, I know you just replace it, but check for power on one of the wires. If no power then start checking fuses, check owners manual for location and fuse size. We need to have power to the switch for the circuit to release the shift lever and also turn on the brake lights. Second thing, if there is power, then see if power is going through the switch, this also has to happen for the same results to occur.
