I'm using the same stuff I painted the other one with. It's not a hi-temp paint, but should hold up fine.

I worked for one in the late 80's in Columbus, Georgia. Every starter, alternator or generator was totally disassembled, hard parts sandblasted and painted. Bearings, bushings and brushes were discarded. All were reassembled with new parts and bench tested by a trained human. They went out of business because they could not compete with the state sponsored and subsidized overseas companies.
My dad fixed everything until or unless it was irreparable, and I try to follow his lead. I first looked to buy a rebuilt unit as I thought that was my only option., then realized I could do it myself, so here I am. The parts I first bought were from a shop in Ohio. I didn't know about the local rebuild shop until later, but will support them myself when I can, and through referral.

I'm still going to hit it with some paint, though. That way dirt won't "soak" into the open pores of the aluminum, and maybe it will stay nicer longer.

.
That looks great! Simple Green is pure magic. I love that stuff. I use it on the Mustang's motor all the time.

All done!

This slip ring assembly looks just a little better than the one I removed.

Pretty!

Looks right at home, doesn't it?

Looks great. Any chance to see what actual output is?

And what was the total cost? Did you use the stuff you posted earlier?

If I had thrown the 99's alternator in, I would have had this one tested, but I just pulled, rebuilt, and reinstalled, so no, no real numbers. Sorry.
I will say that the new stator is definitely more beefy than the stocker. Probably 16 ga windings instead of 18 ga. (I was sure I took a comparison pic, but it was gone when I downloaded from my phone.)

Cost was $110 shipped for the upgrade and rebuild kit from https://alternatorstarterrebuildkits.com/ with a 10% discount code. Next time, I'd just buy the stator/rectifier, though, and source the other parts locally if available. The bearings I got from the shop here were not made in China like the ones in the kit. No harm, though, I used them to rebuild the 99' alt which will go on the shelf as a spare for awhile.

Thanks! I turned out great. Especially for something nobody will ever see, and that will probably end up dirty in little to no time.
