Best Performance Exhaust Setup
Hi, I have a 2000 F150 supercab 4x4 with the 5.4 and I'm looking to completely redo the whole exhaust setup. I currently have the stock manifold and all four cats but replaced the muffler with a dynomax race bullet. My exhaust manifold has a leak so I'm definitely going to get long tube headers but not sure about the rest of the setup.
What is the best exhaust setup for optimal performance? Should I go with 2.5" true duals with an x crossover pipe or would it be better to do a y pipe with single 3" exhaust? I want to get the best gains I can. I would like to keep as much lower end torque as I can because I tow some but if it moves up the power band a little that's fine. I would like it to be as loud as possible but if I have to sacrifice sound for better performance then that's alright.
Also, what brands do y'all recommend for everything? I was thinking obx for the long tubes or pacesetters but I feel like I would lose some low end power with the pacesetters since the collector is 3". Right now my exhaust plan is obx headers without cats into a 3" y pipe and a dynomax race bullet exited out the side in front of the rear tire. Or would it be better to keep it going into a 2.5" y pipe? Let me know what y'all think! I don't know too much about exhaust and how it affects the power so I'm open to all considerations.
One more thing...In Texas, will I pass the emissions test with long tube headers if I do the gotts o2 mod? Do y'all know if they do the sniffer test here? I don't think they're very strict here but I'm not for sure.
Sorry about the long drawn out post, I just want the best for my truck haha. Any input y'all have will be greatly appreciated!! Thanks very much!

Hi & Welcome!

The very best? Cost-no-object?
IF you wanted to spend north of $2K then yes, a specific exhaust architecture: Dynatech longtubes, 2 hiflows, an X-pipe and a pair of unchambered straight - through mufflers, with all mandrel-bent stainless tubing (2.25" for best grunt fer towing, 2.5" for best all-round perf), AND a custom tune to correct for the change in oxygen transport delay incurred by the O2 relocation. Genuine and significant 'area under the curve' improvements. And sound and looks fantastic.

If you can do anything yourself I would say bolt on shorty headers, Keep the stock cats and piping and swap the stock muffler for a magnaflow. Stock piping is more than enough unless you plan on doing some crazy engine work. If you REALLY want duals stick to 2 1/4 inch piping. Its rated to 370 hp.
I loved the exhaust setup I had on my 03. Got my compliments with it.
Stock manifolds, front cats removed, stock rear cats, 2.5" piping Y'ed into a single 3.5", into a 3535XL Aeroturbine muffler out the side like a lightning.
If you decide to go this route I have a BNIB 3535XL for sale. $80 shipped.

I'd rather get longtubes if I get headers...I've heard the shorty headers are a waste. I'll be doing all of the work and welding myself. I just need advice on which longtube headers to get and what pipe size to use
