Ive had striaghts with cats, straights with no rear cats, and flowmaster 40
Flowmaster 40 with all cats- deep rumble but too quiet for me
Straights with all cats - not as deep, alot louder best imo
Flowmaster with no rear cats, idk why but sounded like complete CHIT on my truck. Terrible sound super quite until a 200 rpm window on accel got stupid loud then back to quiet.
No rear cats, straight pipe - current. Sounds GREAT idlidng and across all rpm ranges, really deep idle!! But way too loud for most peoples likings. Its really really loud.

Single out means 1 tail pipe in the read

You can get single in dual out mufflers for a cat back system

I'm a noob, but I've owned a few ferds.
I just picked up my 97 with the baby 4.6. Had the No rear cats with straight pipes... Loud, lack of power, droned, cackled, no deep rumble. Sounded like an old beat up farm truck. (No offense Greenheadkiller98)
I added a new Flopro M12588 (This muffler is IDENTICAL to the Magnaflow 12588 both internally and externally. The only difference is the name and price. Look how similar the part number is...) and what a difference. The truck has a deep powerful note. The interior noise is noticable, but not droning. I drive the truck 60-70 miles a day and couldn't be happier with the sound. The exit on the exhaust is under the rear bumper with 3" rolled lip tips. The entire exhaust is 2 1/4" from the front 2 cats to the rear. An adapter was added to fit the 3" inlet on the M12588.
I had an 02 Harley about 3 years ago with the supercharged 5.4. I had a side exit dual sport truck exhaust on it. It was a 50 state cat back system from Bassani. It was probably the best sounding exhaust I have ever had. At full throttle, this thing SCREAMED. Idle it had a very low, mean rumble. No prolonged drone, just a smooth sounding exhaust system.
So this is my 2 pennies on the deep, powerful sound with each of these two engines. Both are not so loud that it wakes your kids up or gives you a headache from driving with the windows up, but still have a good aggressive tone.

Nope, but i try my best to keep them quiet around cops. But i live pretty far out from town, and cops dont really care about pipes, but they DEFF will pull your ace over for dark tint/HIDs, wich in two years i have successfully avoided getting pulled over somehow

I agree with most everyone here. A good, cheap setup with plenty rumble is all cats, and straights. I ran true dual straights to clear out a little of the poppy sound that extra compression seemed to give on the single pipe setup. I have no idea about the California testing issue however. Nor do i know how many decibals...here in Alabama, you pass guys everyday with completely gutted straights right out the manifold and the cops just wave as you drive by. But on my 4.6 its a nice, loud setup that can be kept to a non offensive sound if needs be. Just enough to be loud and noticed without being a problem.
Depending on how dedicated you are to the sound versus passing the tests, i've seen guys take old flowmasters, glasspacks, run a solid pipe right through them and going on with the exhaust. Giving the appearance of a full muffled system yet obviously not being that
