Default Battery or starter?

Couple weeks ago, my truck wouldn't start after putting gas in. Jumped the battery, but it didn't help. I went and bought a new battery, still no change. After I hit the starter it fired right up and has ever since, without hitting the starter again. I went and got the old battery back and it has worked for a couple weeks now. It still cranks more then it should. Is it possible that it was the battery the whole time? Reason i'm asking is after its been driven for awhile it doesn't crank, just fires right up.

1998 F150 4.2L

Thought I would ask the experts. Thanks

Sounds like a dead spot in the starter. It won't do it all the time just when it happens to stop in that exact spot. Just my $.02

Alright. How soon would you replace the starter? I can change it, just out of the budget for a couple weeks.

It's the starter and you don't want to be hitting a late model starter due to the perm magnets glued to the housing. They will shatter and destroy the starter and you won't get the core credit if you return it with broken magnets/hammer marks.
