Default bad luck - need head work

I was working on the truck today with my friend mechanic at his shop (I wish I had a lift)....

long story short, the noise I thought was an exhaust leak that had developed is actually something inside my driver side head...

This engine only has about 120k miles on it. I just put it in the truck a year and 1/2 ago after the original engine grenaded...

just bad luck I guess.

Question is now what? Drop another $1-2 grand into the engine or unload it while I can and get something different...

damn

Inside the head ? What ? Just a lash adjuster. What else could it be, timming chain ? Is that all he said lol. Could be just an injector. Hell, it could be a bad PCV valve if it was the passenger side.

I hear a noise
Its not an exhaust leak
Do I need new engine? Should i get rid of truck?

Dont you realize how
1. Little information this is
2. Utterly ridiculous it is to ask

Pulling heads will prompt those questions, but its an economic decision that depends on condition of vehicle and your needs.

Do work yourself, and its always cheapest to fix
If you have a mechanic friend...you can fix it

My apologies for too little information and the heated post. It was a frustrating day for me all around....

Lash adjuster is the most likely culprit, loud tapping from the middle of the driver side head, but the mech didnt say for sure. I think once he saw the look on my face he didnt want to say anything more. Friend is 62 yrs old and he probably didnt want me to hit him. hahaha.

Fixing it is my first preference of course, truck is almost paid off with a super cheap payment. But as mbb says, economics has to play a part in it as well. I need to spend a day or so researching options.

edit: with it being sunday, any idea on what the cost of parts and machine work should run me?

Lash adjusters can be replaced without even pulling cams. Theres a way to carefully pry them out

My truck is in good shape, in and out at 230k. I dont blink at spending $$$ on it if needed, its way cheaper than another truck. On a 1000 mile round trip this weekend to watch daughter play ball. I trust it 100%. This engine has only 30 k. But I spent 6000+ 1.5 yrs ago to replace brakes, ball joints, engine, some interior, tires.

Nothing is free to drive forever

Research that one good. I haven't had the pleasure personally yet, replacing one. Have seen guys on line do this incorrectly though, in fact made things worse lol. Anyway, yea, I would seek a little education on doing this procedure myself. First, make sure it is indeed an adjuster and stethoscope which one.

I've seen a guy at the track pop one out with a screwdriver on his Mustang (I've seen some pretty cool and fast repairs in the pits). I was surprised at how easy it came out. Didn't appear to have much tension on the spring either. If it were me, I'd be really careful not to scratch or indent the cam lobe.

I can't recall exactly, but I think they have to be pumped up right before the install. Pretty vague, but I seen a guy do them all and his engine just hammered lol.

Still, I'd research it vs just throwing them in ***** nilly...like they do at the track lol.

Here's a video... but it's a 4V. I believe the 2V is the pretty similar deal... this looks just like what he did.

Holy nuts... not to frighten you, but you may want to watch this. This video automagically popped up as the next video of the first one I posted.
