Default Auto trans shifter problem..

I have a 1997 F150 4.6 Lariat with 187000 miles on it. I just started having an intermitent issue with the column shifter. I can insert the key and start the truck but the shifter will not move, I can then turn off the key and restart( it might take 2-3 times) and then the shifter will move to selected gear. I have tried the search and have come up empty handed and was hoping for some help in diagnosing the problem. Any insight is greatly appreciated....

bump with a question......

could the issue be with the brake shift interlock or should I be looking for something else?

My truck shifts without using the brake and it's hard as hell to put it in gear when I'm flexing

I jst had the same problem with my F150. Check for broken wires at the brake pedal switch. Mine is a 97, also do your brake lights come on with the brake pushd down?

It was the interlock wires after all. Had them cut short and recrimped to the switch and now all is working well. Saved more than a few bucks thanks to this forum and the knowledge posted here by the members.

If you can get the replacement pigtail for the switch it's best to do so. Been there and seen it before. 7 years at Ford and ASE certified in electrical speaks my experience.
