Default Air Conditioning Problem

So I lost air today and found my ac compressor like this. What exactly is missing and how do I fix it?

Holy cow. That's a first for me. You need the clutch assembly. It's been a long while since I've done one of those, but I can get you a parts breakdown probably. It looks to me like you've got a leak too. Maybe PAG on it?

Wow, I just found this. This is exactly what you need to do. When I bought my clutch on my Explorer, it was dealer only. Seems like it was about 60 dollars for the kit back then.

I didn't know if I needed a clutch assembly or just the hub. I have no clue if I have a leak. I do know that I can't add any coolant to it since the compressor isn't turning.

That's great! I'll have to give it a look here in a minute.

Unfortunately, that is correct. You can't introduce R-134a or PAG into the system unless the compressor is working.

BTW, It looks like the entire Motorcraft kit for the 97-01 on Rock Auto is $128. You're going to need the shim kit and bolt since yours are missing. Motorcraft P/N YBR111RM.

hmmm does this mean that I really should not be driving it? I had no idea there was a bolt that fit into there. Can I pull the one off my black truck and bolt it on for a temporary fix?

Turn ON the AC to activate the Magnet before tightening the bolt.

Don't let a shop without a Refrigerant Analyzer connect their machine on your AC to prevent contaminating your refrigerant. http://www.aa1car.com/library/us397.htm

Not sure I understand the point of this? You are supposed to shim it and tighten it before checking the gap.
