I think mine is doing the same thing. I'll have it on panel and feet and it will be blowing super cold air then flip it to ac and the same cold air.

if your truck is completely off and you go to turn on the air, does it come on?

Mine does something similar. When it is put on panel and feet i can hear the compressor come on and the air comes out just like the a/c. Any other time it is on only panel or only feet i can hear the compressor turn off and it feels like normal air should. I have yet to figure out why this happens.

Well at least I'm not alone... I know the AC comes on with the defroster but if I just want ambient air blowing through the panel I'm not sure why the AC has to go :S

I couldn't resist, and had to finally sign up so I could post a reply.
(Been lurking for a while after doing research and then purchasing this rig (the 98) barely a month ago, but that's best left to another thread)

I had this issue, until I found out it's a non-issue.
The only time the AC is not on is when it's set to either "panel" or "floor".
The combined "panel & floor" setting will turn the compressor on.
I kept scratching my head as well and was switching back and forth between settings like everyone else in this thread, and coming to the same conclusion...something must be wrong.

So, I had a brainstorm...
Read the owners manual.

It only took me about a dozen times reading the section over and over, but it finally clicked.

Here's the excerpt from the 1998 manual, page 23:
The air conditioning compressor will operate in all modes except PANEL and FLOOR.
^^^Meaning, "PANEL" and "FLOOR" settings only, not "PANEL & FLOOR".

Continuing on to page 24:
PANEL & FLOOR-
Distributes outside air through the instrument panel registers and the floor ducts.
Heating and air conditioning capabilities are provided in this mode.
^^^Pertinent words highlighted.

I still can't believe they made them this way though.
None of our other 3 vehicles are like that.
It's sad, cause I really like the "dual" setting, but not if it's running the compressor all the time when not needed.

Nice work! I didn't know that. God forbid we actually read the owners manual, LOL!
