98 4x4 problems

Default 98 4x4 problems

I have a manual shift 4x4 and and i was wondering what would cause the 4x4 to not engage. the 4x4 light comes on but the 4x4 still wont work

Either your transfer case isn't engageing, or your front axle isn't engaging. If you jack one front wheel up in the air, and you CAN turn the front drive shaft with your hand, your transfer case isn't engageing. If your CAN'T turn it, but you can turn the front wheel thats in the air, your front axle isn't locking up. If your front axle isn't engaging, its probably a bad actuator.

So both manual and electronic 4x4 systems have actuators?

Yes. The manual shift still had a vaccum actuator to engage the front axle.
