new guy here and new at trying to figure out the problems on newer trucks.I am old school and these things are new to me. I bought this 1997 truck in 1998 and it has been a good truck.I have replaced the fan belt and replaced the ac/heat blend door (that was a real pain).my problem now is it is getting a bad miss in engine.it did it once last year and back in march or april.now it is doing it couple of times a day.what happens its is running fine going down hiway then it starts missing and the check engine lite will flash.it will stop missing after a couple of minutes.it acts like a coil breaking down on the old engine I worked on many years ago.It has 165,000 miles on it and i have never changed plugs or wires.I know ,long time but it has run well and still getting good gas mileage.if it ain't broke don't fix.it has a 4.6 v-8 engine.
any ideas?

Couple suggestions, first you need to open wallet and let the moths out. Just kidding, I think we are of the same mold.

Buy yourself a code reader, bought mine in 02 after putting it off for 4 years with wifes car. This will tell you most likely which cylinder is miss fireing. Yes, it can do that.

Deffinately buy a set of plugs from Ford. I say Ford because of part number changes that I personally don't trust the gypo stores with being up to date or even having personnel that can read let alone offer advice.

Others will offer up there advice, and you might even get a flame thrower or two.

On a side note, what else haven't you done to this truck.

Bill you kinda hard on me.A friend had a code reader it said #2 and #8 cyclinder misfiring. I will buy wires and plugs today and see what happens.
I have not had to repair much on this truck other than engine oil/transmision oil and filters.I replaced the blend door, heater core, shift cable, fan belt.I know plugs had to be burnt up but people talked about running them 100,00 miles so I ran em.
