Default 6 bolt main or 8 bolt main

Hey guys. I recently purchased a motor hoping it's a the same flywheel bolt as the motor in my truck. It's a factory motor, same year same motor, is there any way to tell if my truck is 6 bolt main of 8 bolt main without taking the motor in my truck out?

Your confusing things. The "main" bolt pattern refers to the number of bolts that connect the the crankshaft to the block bearing caps. Usually they are 2 bolt mains, but 4 bolt mains are common on high horsepower motors. Now in order to have a six bolt main, two bolts have to come in horizontally through the block. The 3.5 ecoboost has a six bolt main. Here is an example of a 2 bolt main on the bearing caps.

What your wanting is the flywheel bolt pattern on the end of the Crank shaft.

FYI all Ford 4.6/5.4 have 4 bolt main caps. Some of the higher performce engnes have 6.
