5.4l interchangeability.
Hey guys, got a question for you. I've got an 01 f150 4x4 with a bad 5.4l engine. I've found a good deal on an 02 5.4l that came out of an f150 4x4 but all the salvage yards and the ford stealership told me that the motors changed from 99-01 and 02-04. What would possibly change so drastically on from 01 to 02 that would not let me bolt the 02 motor up and use my wiring harness and ecu? Has anyone else done a swap like this? Any help would be great! Thank you.
That's what I was thinking to man. I'm guessing there was just slight changes from the 01 to the 02 because all the salvage yard programs say 99-01 is different than the 02-04 engines and none say that the 02-04 2v are interchangeable with the 99-01 2v motors. I'm gonna go ahead and bight the bullet and get this engine cause I just can't picture there being enough differences between that would make the swap a) not bolt up and b) make my existing wiring harness and ecu not control it. If anyone knows otherwise than please let me know. Thanks for the reply man, much appreciated.
Difference is the intake. most 99-01 I have seen all had aluminum intakes.
All 02+ i have seen had plastic intakes. There were also little changes to the PCV system. There will be a few vacuum ports that are different.

Hum... That's interesting because the engine in the 01 f150 came with a black plastic intake. my other two 5.4l's in my f250's both 99's have aluminum intakes. Also when I tried putting a cam from one of the 99's into the f150 5.4l, because the sprocket on that cam sheared off, the cam from the 99 5.4 was .040 of an inch larger and could not be bolted down to the f150 motor. I may have a 92+ motor in the f150. Is that possible? Thanks for the reply by the way.
