Default 5.4 Triton supercrew owners, need your input on new truck.

Hey guys, I'm considering a 01-03 F150 supercrew 4x4 with the 5.4 and my questions are:

1. What kind of gas mileage are you guys getting and how many miles per tank of gas?
2. The 5.4 seems to be a pretty reliable engine am I correct? Any problems with these engines? I've heard of coil packs going bad.
3. Transmission issues or are they pretty reliable?

I have a 2003 lariat fx4 with the 5.4 209,xxx miles. Bought at 182k but only things I've done to it was just general tune up plugs, filters, fluids, etc. and just had the front driver side wheel bearing go bad on me Saturday. Love my truck you'll be pleased with the power and room of these trucks. I'm 6'6 tall 245 pounds and am plenty comfortable driving it 80+ miles a day

Yeah I'm in the 14-16 club for every day, 12 if I'm really enjoying the Flowmaster. Got 18 after my mods one time on a road trip, driving right with a tailwind. The 5.4 is a pretty reliable engine, you'll love the truck. The little bit it lacks in bed space, it more than makes up for in dry cab space.

I have a Scab myself, but I have an 01 5.4 and it treats me right. Got enough oomph when I want it and calm and collected when I don't. I average in the 13-14 range, but that's 80% ish city/town driving, and I like to hear my CAI (and more recently, my own Flowmaster) a lot. If I drove like a human being and let the truck shift at 2k or lower more often, my mileage would increase, no doubt.

I haven't had any transmission or coil issues yet, but I've only had my truck for 1.5 years and only put 9k on it. It was my grandfather's before me and I don't have any knowledge of what he may have done.

I'm sure more owners will speak about this. But I do know one thing from creeping these forums. AVOID 3V ENGINES. Cam phaser issues or something like that.

3v engines are in the 04+ f150-250's. The 97-03 are 2v. The only real problems with this motor is it likes to blow out plugs, which is nothing to worry about if you torque them down to, I think they said 25-28 ft/lbs. Other than that, just maintaining it.

Also, keep an eye out for the headgaskets. I've read about a few of them and I just got a 2000 f150 with the 5.4 and it was puking oil into the antifreeze.

I have a 5.4 FX4 2003 Screw. 159,xxx miles, Edge programmer, e-fans, flowmaster exhaust, 285/70 17 tires. I get 14-16 regularly, 18 if I do all highway driving. I pull a 4,000 pound camper all the time with it and haven't had any transmission problems. The bed is short, but the cab is roomy. I like it alot and it's been very reliable. Depending on the mileage, you might want to check the UCAs and lower ball joints. They tend to wear out around 70-100K.

i have a 2002 screw and love it just check to see if it is missing any bolts on the manifold if so you will need to get a whole new manifold and the cost for the whole deal is $400 after that make sure the lifters arnt clicking no harm on the engine or power loss just a a litttle annoying other than that love the truck
