Default 4x4 stuck

My transfer case is stuck in 4h. I removed the shift motor and tried to turn it by hand back to 2wd but it springs right back to 4H.

Also what kind of damage can be done by me driving with the transfer case in 4wd? The front tires are not actually engaged. The only indication that it is in 4wd is the transfer case. There I no light on the dash and esof does not work.

thanks to anyone who takes time to respond

Lift your front wheels off the ground and turn them by hand to make sure nothing is engaged and if you arent interested in fixing it then you should be fine driving it around as is. Sounds like something in your tcase decided not to work for you.

As JP says, take the pressure off the front axle, and if you can, put the rear off the ground also. This way there is absolutely nothing bindding the tcase. Switch it back into 2wd and it should hold then. If it doesn't, you could have a bad switch, connecting 2 positions of the contacts. You could also have a bad tcase. See what you get with it with no bind, and get back to us.

I forgot something. You pulled the motor, so that sort of rules the switch out. Check it and see if it will go manually into 2wd like JP said, with the front and or rear without any load on them..

Thanks for the replies. With the wheels on the ground I can not even move the dial that is on the back of the transer case. If I lift the wheels up I am able to turn it, but it snaps right back to 4H. Each front wheel moves independently with no resistance.

Does the front drive shaft turn freely as well as the wheels?

It's sounding like your case is the bad part in your scenario. The switch should lock over manually, unless the unit itself is damaged in the shift pin mechanism. Which it sounds like it is. At least it's the t/case and not the transmission.
